Love painting in the style of the epic Roadrunner vs Wiley Coyote. These were done in Sketchbook Pro in a couple of hours...made me want to watch cartoons. I love how simple the backgrounds were for those skits...nothing that could take away from the amazing physical comedy...but the starkness and graphic quality is just so fabulous.

Well, the year is over...and I did make my goal...just not like I thought I would. I have in fact done a painting for every day of the year, if I count the the pieces I do at work that I obviously can't post.

Admittedly, the goal was to accomplish 365 paintings in my spare time, but with the constraints of the year, that didn't exactly happen. I did learn a lot this year though, and I think I'll keep going until I reach the 365 outside pieces.

This year my goal is a little more realistic. I'm signed up for The Sketchbook Project, which should be fun and it's just one book by April...a bit more manageable with all the other personal goals I've set.

With that...here's some more art

So, I found this site http://www.spoonflower.com/ where you can print your own fabric designs, and it got me thinking about patterning and such. So, for this set of 7, I gave a shot at some graphic patterning based on fairy tales...some obvious and others rather obscure. Don't know that I'll really order any of these as prints, but it was a good exercise in simplifying a graphic idea, and making a seamless pattern.

So this week's inspiration came from one of my favorite films, The Mummy. I love adventure stories, and when you combine adventure with a nice mix of romance and comedy, that's precisely my cup of tea. Now, frankly none of these turned out how I wanted...but I was keeping myself to a strict 1 hour rule...and as such was forced to live with some mistakes. Ah well. Evie turned out to be my favorite by far...I guess the old saying of a hundred paintings for one good one lives on. Sigh.

All in watercolor this week...and my 'one of these things is not like the other' painting is the result of a demo, that matched in color palette...so Sunflower Girl :) As usual, each of these was done in about an hour.

So, I just downloaded the 2011 Sketchbook Pro...and man, it's freakin' awesome! Only $59, and it's a major upgrade. Still lacks the breadth of Photoshop obviously, but for sketching, it's much more intuitive and sensitive to tablet movement. This recent update has added things like layer styles, text, and my tool of the week 'symmetry'...hence spaceships

Maybe someday I'll paint the others....

I was looking back at some of the background art from Pocahontas, and loving the styling this week. So, for some quick studies, I've been doing some background re-creation paintings. Really good exercise in compostion studies...hoping that somehow the amazing layouts will just seep into my brain and make me draw that way without thinking about it :) These were all done in about 45 minutes each, using Sketchbook Pro.

So, it's not that I haven't been doing art....just haven't had a spare minute to even think about posting. Over the next couple of days I'll post the rest of April, and hopefully May. Crazy sauce....but better too busy than nothing to do :)

So week one of April was Gibson week. I adore the work of Charles Gibson, and have been working on a personal project with homage to his style for several years now. Always trying to refine my execution of his linework styling...someday that project will see the light of day...someday....

Week 2 of April was paint like crazy portraits...I'm not actually happy with any of these, but it was a good exercise to force myself to paint fast again. I've been working on really long term stuff lately, and my speed has suffered. My patience with follow through to finish has gotten better though, so it's always give and take. These were done in about 30 minutes to an hour. Really forcing myself to not go past that, even though they're not done...trying to get back some of that focus that timed painting gives.

Bleh...yeah really don't like these.Anyway, more to come, and hopefully something I'm happier with!

So the past couple of weeks I've been doing my daily paintings...just haven't had any time to post. My lovely sister Kristi, is going into her next film, and I've been doing some concept costume sketches for her to help her brainstorm the color pallette. Romantic comedies are the best! Places I looked for inspiration include the canceled-much-too-soon Pushing Daisies and Minnie Driver's costumes in Return to Me. Good thing I can't sew...I clothe the world in awesome 50's inspired bright colored clothing and no one could stop me...hehehe

p.s. Sorry for the watermarks...but people are nuts. Properties from Kristi and Steve's last film have already been pirated....and so not in the Jack Sparrow cool kind of way....

Sleeping Beauty After Effects Process

So, this was a test project I finished several months ago...and I just now compressed it enough to post. The idea was to recreate a backrounnd from an animated film, in this case Sleeping Beauty, and then mess around in After Effects treating it like a real set. Below you can see the process from my early sketch, to the digital painting, and finally the Quick Time of the After Effects film. All in all, I'm pleased with the results...learned alot just playing around with different effects.

p.s. this was finished before I started at Imagineering, so not done under Disney or anything like that...just me working things out

I started another trading card series of paintings, and so far I really like how they're going...just like the last series, these are watercolor on cold press, 2.5X3 inches. Then I was messing around with my Photoshop upgrade (hurray for CS4) and working on lineart...and there was Ariel :) Kinda fun to draw such a classic character...haven't done that for years.Anyway, cheers!

So I found these cool little trading cards from Strathmore that you can get in all kinds of paper. I picked up some of the watercolor ones, mainly to get some measurements(which happen to be 2.5 X 3.5, in case you were wondering) and look into the trading program, cause it sounded like a fun way to see cool art. I decided to do some quickie watercolor pieces of pictures that I''ve taken at Disneyland, and I'm amazed at how addicting these little paintings are. I think Ill probably go back into these with prismacolor over the top, just to clean up some lines and such, but we'll see.

Time to finally update with some new stuff...it's been an insane ammount of time. But here's some of what I've been doing with more to follow soon, I hope :)

Moose texture for a project with Kelly Loosli. This was painted in Photoshop using hi-res photos I took at the Bean museum, and then applied in Cinema 4-D. Now the trick is to get it back into Soft Image.

Ah, the knot charm. Despite its simple appearances, this little thing was quite a beast. WIth a little bizzare-ly appropriate warping in the uv's though, it turned out all right. This texture was created with procedural shading and bump for the knots and wood grain/varnish, and painted textures with a hi-res scan for the chords and lettering.

This was for a fun thing online called the Harry Potter Fan Art project. I don't usually do much in the fan art genre, but this one kind of caught my attention. This was a pretty quick painting done in Photoshop using a watercolor-ish brush. Kinda fun.

Pajama Gladiator DVD covers

So, here are the covers I've just finished for Pajama Gladiator's DVD case. I'm really excited about the way they turned out. It was really fun to experiment with making things look like an old comic. Now all that's left is the spine, and we'll be good to go. Which is good because Kites is gonna be right on PJG's heels.

Scera Theater and such

So I've been hired on by Holdman Studios to design stained glass art pieces...Lots of fun, and something new. So these are designs for the Scera Theater in Provo...they're transitioning from a film and play theater to just a playhouse and wanted these art instillations to make it look more art deco and fancy. So the colored ones are my original ideas, and then the sketch is an alternate suggestion for incorporating the legend of Timpanogos, a local myth, that we're also playing around with. So we'll see what happens...so far it's been really fun!

So, here's my first completely lit shot for Kites. I think it turned out rather nicely..it was a beast to light because of the really dramatic camera swoop, but I'm pleased with the final result.

I've totally been on a Grand Canyon kick lately...I can't stop thinking about it...go figure. So, I did this piece yesterday using the pen tool in Photoshop. I'm going for the retro travel poster look. It's almost done, I just need to add the text...I'll post the final as soon as it's done. I'm pretty pleased with the way this one turned out, and it was fun to mess around with vector style again.

These are the first sketches I've done in a long time just for fun. I wanted to draw some pirates and so I did...the satisfaction of doing that really made me feel a lot better. I've been really burned out lately, to the point that I didn't even want to THINK about drawing...but doing some sketching just for fun really helped me get out of that funk.

Massive update o' doom

So, things have been a bit crazy lately. I've been doing a lot of interviewing, working on Kites, and tying things up so I can graduate in a few weeks. Jungle Book is finished, which helped with the workload some, and things seem to be coming along, and I'll be posting more frequently again.

This first group of pictures is work from Kites. First on the docket is the start of a lighting shot...I'll post the finished one when it's done. I like the way the glowiness of this sequence is going, and now that we've got some new ideas thanks to Pixar, it looks like we'll really be able to achieve the look that we want.

This is(hopefully) the last color pass on the phoenix. I've got a few little edits to make, but then all that's left is a new opacity, specular, and bump map. So, crossing our fingers, this should be done in the next week.

These next images are some sketch work I did for my interview with the Disney Imagineering Parade and Show department. They were really nice, and I had a great time meeting with them.

Finally, the end product of Jungle Book. I'm pretty pleased with the way these turned out, I do want to get some nice production shots though if I can.

Inspired by Mucha's "Zodiac." This was for a prompt over at The Quick Draw, to draw a personification of a season in Mucha's style. Lots of fun and really challenging.

I may turn it into a Christmas label for cocoa or something :)
